Activities with the Matis indigenous people in Heliconia Natural Reserve

Third to sixth day.

Blowguns
Walk in the jungle with the indigenous people to observe how they hunt using a blowgun for their food.

Trapping and fishing with teh Matis
At the jungle, traps are set to hunt mammals and to
protect the camp from human invaders
Fishing is done with bow, arrows and Barbasco, a plant that is toxic to fish.

Medicinal Plants
Search the jungle for medicinal plants that the indigenous people use.

Buchute, Ant and Curare

Hike in the jungle to look for a plant called Buchute in the indigenous dialect. This plant is used by indigenous people to dilate the pupils to see better when hunting.
You have to remove the roots of the tree and scrape its bark, then mix it with water and apply a few drops. The drops cause pain and burning. It is not easy to find this plant.

The bark must be removed and boiled in water for several hours. Then the mace is used on the blowgun darts to hunt monkeys and birds.

Tachiua ants are brave and warriors.
The activity consists of looking for a nest and placing your hands.
Only few can endure the pain.

Huito temporary tattoos and permanent tattoos.

The temporary tattoo is made from the fruit called huito. The fruit is scraped and the liquid is used to paint the body. Tattoo duration up to 10 days.
For the permanent tattoo you have to get Copal tree resin from the jungle. The Tisne is extracted and then the skin is pierced with thorns from the Chontaduro tree.

 Matis History

At night he sits and listens to the history of the indigenous people. They drink a liquid extracted from a vine called Tachit. This bush gives them good energy and inspires them for stories. The first sip of liquid is bitter, the third is already sweet.

Handcrafted work with clay
Masks and tableware are made from clay found in the jungle.

Kampoo frog ritual.
The indigenous people look for the poisonous frog that lives in the trees at night. You have to extract the poison from the frog. The skin is then burned with a vine and the poison is placed on the burned skin. The reaction produces chills, vomiting and dizziness.
The indigenous people use it to cleanse the body and as an initiation ritual to become better hunters.
